European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
