In the dying moments, sheer ecstasy erupted for Chelsea and interim manager Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández bundled in a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola ranting in frustration and provided the stand-in Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane could be billed as the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch, making the recollection of Fernández's crucial intervention one to warm the 40-year-old throughout his career.

A Stark Contrast in Experience

On the home bench stood the most decorated manager of his time, a man with four decades of silverware for elite clubs Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, overseeing his 1,012th match. In the visitors' dugout, was a one-time trainer at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and stepped up to make his senior managerial bow after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, most notably Chelsea's key midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed close-to-impossible.

Another key part of his blueprint was to maximise disruption. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea delayed at a dead ball, a sure sign the hosts' rhythm was being broken up and the Guardiola plan was being thwarted.
